Pine Belt Quilters were treated to a delightful program by
members Jean Martin and Minnie Watts at the February meeting. In a tribute to
Black History Month, Jean and Minnie were dressed in period costume from the
1800s and described life as a slave and the desire to escape to freedom.
They were assisted by Pastor Tommy Fairley of Collins, who
played the harmonica--old favorites like “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Down By
the Riverside,” “I’ll Fly Away,” and “Amazing
Grace.” You’d have thought you were at an old-fashioned camp meeting as the
group clapped in rhythm and sang along to the melodies we all remember from our
youth.
Jean related many stories of the Underground Railroad and
how people who facilitated escaping slaves were referred to as conductors, safe
houses as stations, and the runaways as passengers. One of the most famous
conductors was Harriet Tubman (1823-1913). Many people gave food, clothing, and
hiding places for the travelers. It was unlawful to teach slaves to read, and
many forms of messages and directions were used. Stories have been passed down
through generations of the use of quilts in windows and on fences to indicate a
code for sending these messages. It is thought that Jacob’s Ladder pointed the
way; Wagon Wheel meant it was time to go; Bear’s Paw that there was food nearby;
Sailboat that this was a safe passage to freedom. Although there may have been a fear
of water, the slaves often walked in creeks and a river’s edge to avoid leaving
tracks and scent for tracking dogs.

Jean had made quilts in many of the patterns from these
stories. Pictured below are her Wagon Wheel and Sailboat quilts.
Many suggestions were listed when we were asked to think about a word for the year, such as "hope," "finish," "patience," "gratitude," "excitement."
Our new president, Susie Jackson, gave outgoing president, Betty Allen, a quilt made by the members and assembled by Donna Crager.
We were treated to a beautiful trunk show of quilts by our member Anne Hindmarch and her friend, Bridgette Haas, both of Ocean Springs. Anne is originally from Denmark and Bridgette from East Germany; they married and came to the US in the 1960s.
Anne's talent is not new to us--she was our 2012 Best of Show winner with her miniature Dear Jane blocks quilt.

The officers and their committees have a busy year planned--monthly fat quarter drawings and door prizes (furnished by those with birthdays that month), friendship blocks, a new round robin challenge, and our ongoing pro bono projects, and, of course, our October 3-4-5 quilt show. This month we took in 28 pillows, 4 walker totes and 9 catheter bag covers for donations to hospitals.
We had guests present to receive a patriotic quilt made by Mary Nell Magee and quilted by Wanda Wallace. The quilt was donated to the Wounded Minutemen of Mississippi for raffle on March 17, 2014, in connection with a golf tournament at Pine Creek Golf Club in Purvis. All proceeds from this raffle will be used to meet the needs of area soldiers wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan. Our generous members turned in 105 pillows, 2 receiving blankets, and 12 walker totes at today's meeting. Members were encouraged to finish and bring in any children's quilts to be donated at our December luncheon meeting. We also will donate stocking stuffers for women and children. Representatives from several agencies will be invited to the December meeting to receive these gifts. Our display at the Hattiesburg Visitors Center was changed for the month of November. Husband and wife team Joe and Betty Bingham hung their works for the public to enjoy. These are displayed around the banister of the second floor. We are told that visitors to the Center are always complimentary of the displays provided by Pine Belt Quilters.
We were treated to an inspiring trunk show by the Brookhaven Piecemaker Quilters at our October 16 meeting. Ten quilters came and shared their stories of making their beautiful quilts. The bargello quilt hanging was made by Juanita Ashley. Several of the quilts had won ribbons in various shows, and sisters Betty and Juanita admitted to being very competitive with each other.
We voted to elect the nominating committee's slate of officers for 2014-2015. Appreciation was expressed to the committee for their work.

President - Susie Jackson
Vice President - Paula Jones
Secretary/Membership - Anne Esteve
Secretary/Newsletter - Linda Flanders
Treasurer - Margie Hancock

Special thanks to Linda Flanders and Margie Hancock for contining to serve for second two-year terms! Wanda Wallace will chair the 2014 show. The VisitHattie Challenge theme is THE HATTIESBURG ZOO. All other entry information will be posted on our website soon. (An announcement will appear on this blog when that information is available.)

Dues ($20) are being accepted for the upcoming year; it is important to pay early or on time to be listed in the published membership list in January.
Reports were given on workshops and other guild activities, and several people took home kits (top, backing, batting) to complete before our December quilts giveaway.

We received 123 pillows, 17 walker totes, 17 catheter bag covers, and 9 small blankets at the October meeting. Betty Allen read a touching thank-you note from a nurse/mother about how these gifts calm and comfort children, making us even more aware of why we do these activities!Martha Ginnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16773955965856508089noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6025885510635006858.post-15136323528336560922013-09-23T00:08:00.000-05:002013-09-23T00:08:20.921-05:00Blueberry Dance Quilt WinnerThe proud winner of "Blueberry Dance" was 10-year-old Brennin Carlisle of Poplarville. Drawing was held for the Blueberry Dance raffle quilt, which
raised money for quilt batting and borders for Children’s Quilt activities. The quilt was embroidered and assembled by Betty Moore and quilted by Wanda Wallace. The
winner was Brennin Carlisle, a 10-year-old from Poplarville. This meeting report is a month old--sorry. Our August meeting was a giant sit and sew, with a variety of activities going on, from hand stitching bindings, learning to turn tubes, learning to make ruched flowers, sewing walker totes, knitting, and, of course, lots of visiting and talking.
Our busy quilters did not neglect our charitable activities, though. There were 34 children's quilts brought in; 63 pillows, 15 walker totes, and 23 catheter bag covers. Each student had her own table to work on, and we were spread out all over Kelley Fellowship Hall. It is like moving to pack up the machines, mats, rotary cutters, fabric, and all the other sewing equipment needed to take one of these classes. But we are lucky that MQA hosts these annual educational seminars with nationally known teachers. We had 34 new quilts brought in for the Parade, and members voted for their favorite by ballot. Makers completely encircled the room to give everyone a good look at the quilts.

The tables were decorated with red, white and blue streamers and flags, and we had a full table of delicious summer foods. In addition to the quilts brought in, members turned in 63 pillows, 15 walker totes, and 23 catheter bag covers. These will be donated to Forrest General Hospital and Marion County General Hospital. We have received thank-you letters describing how happy these gifts make the patients who receive them.

Nancy is an author, fabric designer with a 25 yr. history of
quilt making. She has created over 90 quilt patterns for a variety of fabric
manufacturers. She has authored 12 books published by Martingale Publishing Co.
She has taught many workshops nationwide for guilds, shops and conferences including
International Quilt Festival in Houston, A Mountain Quilt Fest in Pigeon Forge
TN, and Road to California. Nancy believes quilting should be fun. In her
classes, her goal is for students to have a good time, learn something new, and
make a quilt they will enjoy for years to come.
Martha Ginn
introduced the topic and gave some illustrations of moving from traditional to
art quilts, and Sylvia Blissett, Doris Dunn, Jo-Ann Evans, Pat Faulkender,
Gloria Green, Betty Bingham and Betty Allen brought some of their art quilts as examples of
the diverse techniques used. To move from traditional into original designs,
most followed a path of getting bold with color, combining traditional
techniques with new ones, layering, painting, adding unusual fibers.
We showed examples of realistic art quilts based on
photographs, pieces loosely inspired by photos, abstracts, unusual
cutting/piecing techniques, strata cut and reassembled, addition of other
elements (twisted fabric, organza, photos printed on fabric, Angelina fibers,

To help unlock your creativity, here are some suggestions:
1. Keep a scrapbook of images, ideas, clippings, drawings,
and notes. These things will help to plant the seeds of innovation.
2. Attend art shows and craft exhibits, not just quilt
shows. Other creative fields can supply fresh inspiration.
3. Spend lots of time with books, especially art and nature
books with their beautiful photographs.
4. Pay special attention to nature’s diverse forms.
5. Recognize the design motifs around you--architecture,
dishes, fruits, vegetables, bridges, trees. Keep your camera handy to capture
ideas.
6. Attend workshops and classes to widen your knowledge base.
We
donated 21 more quilts to the Veterans Home in Collins, and our members brought
in 74 pillows, 27 walker totes/catheter bag covers, one NICU isolette cover.
The
last few more spots in Judy Momenzadeh’s workshop were filled. We will be eager
to see the beautiful butterfly wall quilts that will come from this workshop. Martha Ginnhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16773955965856508089noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6025885510635006858.post-50907275190783547972013-03-29T16:09:00.000-05:002013-11-22T11:23:56.081-06:00Dianne Springer presents Scrap-O-Lator
Susie Jackson showed the Butterfly art quilt by Judy Momenzadeh, who will present a workshop April 24 for PBQ. Judy is from Baton Rouge and was a vendor (Mo & Mike) at our 2012 quilt show. One hundred quilts have been given to families of fallen soldiers. We have presented 25 quilts to veterans at the VA home in Collins. The boutique needs Christmas fabric; please bring to donate. Also, the hospitals have ongoing needs for walker totes or catheter bag covers. These can be made easily by using a folded quilted placemat and adding ties for attaching. We will also be making more isolette covers for the NICU. Contact an officer or Children's or Boutique leaders to get involved.
